Five protestors await arrest

Hills, B.C.

Show above are five of the twelve protestors who chose to be arrested. The twelve arrestees ranged in age from a couple in their mid-sixties to 16 year-old high school student. The student's statement, which was read after she was taken away by police, said, "I was ten years old when the slide from the clearcut on Ranch Ridge washed over the highway seconds before I arrived. Surveying the mess of mud and logs that blocked my path, I realized that clearcuts are not only ugly, but they pose real threats."

One of the province's best known bear biologists was also arrested. Millions of people around the world have watched Wayne McCrory as he guided TV film crews into the Khutzeymateen Valley, which is now protected, and the proposed Spirit Bear park, which is currently severely threatened by logging.

"The issue in the Slocan Valley is about leaving some old-growth forest between parks to maintain biological diversity and protect such things as water and native cultural values," states McCrory. After he was taken away by police, his sister Colleen read his statement to the crowd, which stated in part: "I cannot sit at my farm across the way and watch one company, Slocan Forest Products, tear down the mountain, tree by tree, road by road, clearcut by clearcut, landslide after landslide, silted streamed after silted stream, and slash fire after slash fire."
