Debris Torrent 10 kilometers west of Castlegar closes Highway #3 on or about March 26, 1999.

Old Access Road.

Forest Practices Code Nonapplicable

This slide from an old road demonstrates some of the costly consequences of logging sensitive areas. The side cast fill of an the access road became saturated to the point of failure. The resulting debris torrent scoured trees and soil to bedrock for 100 metres, crossing Highway #3 and emptying into Blueberry Creek, a consumptive use watershed and fish bearing stream. This debris torrent also severed BC Tel's fiber optics line, closing down the internet, bank and credit card transactions for part of a day. There is a history of old debris torrents originating along a 1/2 kilometer distance along this access road that have impacted this highway in the past.
