[Coffee Creek Landslides]

slide was up to 125m wide
The slide was 125m wide where it slid over the Coffee Creek Forest Service Road in the center of the picture.
slides ran into Coffee Creek
The slide ran into Coffee Creek on the left and filled a spring flood channel on the right and flowed into Coffee Creek.
Forest Service Road at 1.4k bridge at 1.1k on Forest Service Road
Coffee Creek Forest Service Road at 1.4 k. Approx. 100 m of road destroyed in this section. There is an FPC road built on steep (65% - 70% +) slopes above the 1.1 k bridge and this section of road. Three smaller debris torrents came down this section of road from the vicinity of the road above. Ministry of Forests (MOF) bridge at 1.1 k of the Coffee Creek FSR. Debris from the various torrents that entered Coffee Creek plugged the bridge and then the creek cut a new channel around either side cutting out the bridge support. It then dropped into the channel. This bridge was built within the last 5 years. It is a steel and cement structure worth approx 60,000 - 80,000. A brand new bridge at 2.2k had its abutments damaged.
Forest Service Road at .85k Forest Service Road at .7k
Coffee Creek Forest Service Road at .85 k. Coffee Creek Forest Service Road at .7 k. Note the roadbed on the extreme right of picture. The opposite road bench can be determined on the center left of the picture approx. 50 ft above the creek. Approx 50m of the road was destroyed.
damage to main Kootenay Lake Highway
Tandem truck on the single remaining lane of Highway #31. Note the broken pavement under the truck. The outer lane of the highway has to be built up from the creek, a vertical distance of approx. 50 ft. Special sized rip rap has to be hauled to this site - a very costly procedure. This picture was taken one week after the event and the work may be one third complete. Also this debris torrent event is 5 k from the Ainsworth debris torrent of last December where Meadow Creek Cedar was fined $3000.
