Our Hopes and Aspirations

Group workshop on Morningstar ridgeWe believe that the resolution of global environmental problems begins at a local level, and that it is our responsibility as citizens to guarantee a natural heritage for future generations, that is at least as healthy as the one we have inherited. We therefore promote forest management decisions that consider and reflect all values provided by the forest. We believe that any proposal for development in our community must protect the needs of the ecosystem and of those who live here. We advocate decisions based on leading edge scientific knowledge that includes identifiable and accountable sectors within the community (local sectors, not sectors of interest that are controlled or directed from outside the Slocan Valley). We know (being part of a greater ecosystem) that the longer we delay the inevitable changes in dealing with economy and environment, the more severe and challenging they will be. Following this line of thought we are working hard to bring about changes that include, but which are not limited to:

community mud rompWater protection plans as a priority over timber management plans. A transition to a sustainable ecosystem-based economy that includes full and diverse employment for the people of the Slocan Valley. The implementation of a valley-wide ecosystem-based plan which determines where logging can take place within consumptive use watersheds, while ensuring the protection of water in the present and in the future. Meaningful participation, including shared decision-making by residents of the Slocan Valley in regards to activities in their consumptive use watersheds. Alternatives to clearcutting and the incorporation of value-added approaches in all manufacturing activities, particularly in the timber section. A community that works together towards becoming a global model for a sustainable transition economy.
